Nearly every person who wears makeup on a regular basis has experienced that frustrating moment at least once: you tilt your overstuffed makeup bag to grab a lipstick, and a whole pan of loose powder slips out and clatters onto the hard tile or wooden floor, splitting into dozens of fine crumbs and losing its original smooth compact shape. Most people would sigh, dump the crumbs into the trash, and order a new pan immediately, assuming the product is damaged beyond repair, and there is no way to bring it back to its original functional state. A lot of people even blame the product’s bad quality for breaking so easily, thinking the powder is pressed too loose to survive a minor fall.
The truth behind this common breakage is far from a quality defect. Almost all mass produced pressed powder products on the market are pressed to a standard porosity rate between 15 percent and 20 percent during the manufacturing process, which leaves a small portion of empty gaps between the fine powder particles.
